Medicaid and Medicare as we have known them for five decades are now deeply threatened by Paul Ryan’s budget plan, which Senator Darling supports.  The national debt limit crisis has intensified the threat to these vital and widely popular public commitments.  In addition, as Co-Chair of the Legislature’s budget writing committee, Alberta Darling pushed through Scott Walker’s state budget which slashed $500 million from Wisconsin’s Medicaid programs, including BadgerCare and Family Care.

“There is a cloud over the anniversaries of Medicaid and Medicare this year due the radical attacks on these programs which threaten to undermine the nation’s historic health care commitments to seniors, children and people with disabilities,” said Robert Kraig, Executive Director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin.  “It is outrageous that Alberta Darling is ignoring the wishes of her constituents, and supporting efforts to undermine Medicaid and Medicare as we know them.”

“When it comes to issues that matter to working Wisconsin families, State Senator Alberta Darling is not on our side,” said Dian Palmer, RN, President of SEIU Healthcare Wisconsin.  “At a time when many men and women who have worked hard all of their lives and had hoped to retire are struggling to afford gas, groceries, and rising healthcare costs, we must protect the essential healthcare services Medicaid and Medicare provides to seniors, people with disabilities and working families.”
