Citizen Action of Wisconsin joined with coalition partners Wednesday, 9/12 for a nationwide day of action to end to Bush tax cuts for the richest 2%. The action, held in front of Senator Ron Johnson’s office, delivered a 3-foot “check” made payable to millionaires who will dodge an average of $160,000 in taxes while hardworking middle and working class Americans foot the bill. The action targeted Senator Johnson specifically for his recent vote in favor of the Hatch Amendment. Sen. Johnson voted to raise taxes on 25 million working families in order to help provide a $160,000 tax break to millionaires. Johnson’s idea for increasing revenue – raise taxes on already struggling Americans by ending a tax credit that helps make college affordable (the American Opportunity Tax Credit) and ending improvements to the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.
“It’s disgusting that Sen. Johnson would raise taxes on 98% of hardworking Americans to give more tax cuts to millionaires, that they don’t need and America can’t afford,” said Jennifer Epps-Addison, Economic Justice Director for Citizen Action of Wisconsin
Sen. Ron Johnson’s vote to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the richest 2 percent, which would give people who make over $1 million a year an average tax cut of $160,000, while raising taxes on 25 million working Americans and slashing priorities like Medicare and education.
“Ending the Bush tax cuts for the richest 2 percent would raise $1 trillion in revenues over 10 years, which could be used to protect middle-class priorities like education, public infrastructure, and healthcare, while reducing the deficit,” said Epps-Addison. Tax fairness is expected to be a major issue in the November election- make sure your elected officials stand on the side of hardworking Americans and not the super rich.
