Tomorrow at a media briefing in Milwaukee, advocates for health care, seniors, and people with disabilities will discuss the ramifications of Congressman Paul Ryan’s budget proposal for the future of Medicare, Medicaid, and other vital public programs. Ryan’s proposal was adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday and is now before the U.S. Senate. It includes provisions that would block grant the Medicaid program, leading to drastic cuts in health care for low income Wisconsinites and long term care for seniors and people with disabilities. Ryan’s plan also turns Medicare into a voucher system which would drastically reduce the value of the benefit and force seniors to buy insurance from for-profit insurance companies. At the same time Ryan’s budget includes massive additional tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
