Listen to this weekend’s Battleground Wisconsin Podcast. Our panel discuss Gov. Walker and Lt. Gov. Kleefisch's laughable new position that they have always said job creation in Wisconsin would be "back loaded". We cover the latest recall news and discuss an important new Pew poll that says conflict between rich and poor now eclipses racial strain and friction between immigrants and the native-born as the greatest source of tension in American society, a 50% increase from the 2009 survey. In addition, we have more health care news and discuss the Mining Bill public hearing this week in Hurley.

Anita Johnson, Organizer Citizen Action Of Wisconsin
Monday, January 16th is the day we celebrate the birth date of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This date, always relevant, takes on new meaning this year in light of the “occupy” movements across the country, the worker rights protests here in Wisconsin and the national discussion over income inequality in America.
When Dr. King died in 1968, he was in the midst of organizing African American sanitation workers in Memphis. He was also in the middle of planning bigger things – a national Poor People’s Campaign that would result in a massive occupation of Washington, D.C. This occupation was meant to challenge the income inequality in our country.
Would Dr. King have embraced the “Occupy” movement today and the “We are the 99 percent” framework that supports it? Assuredly, yes. When a memorial for Dr. King was dedicated in Washington, D.C. last October, Dr. King’s daughter, Rev. Bernice King, described the Occupy movement as a “freedom explosion.”
Rev. Bernice King reminded those attending the dedication that when her father died, “he was in the midst of starting a poor peoples’ campaign where he was galvanizing poor people from all walks of life to converge on this nation’s capital and stay here and occupy this place until there was change in the economic system and a better distribution of wealth.”
Galvanize lower-income people. Work for racial and economic justice, and build an economy that works for the 99 percent, including those Americans who are un- or under-employed and need our help. And occupy until it’s done. That’s what Dr. King would do.

New Stance Will Not Give WI Enough Time to Implement Affordable Care Act
By: Robert Kraig, Executive Director
In an interview with Jason Stein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Thursday in the Governor’s Mansion, Governor Scott Walker made a major and sudden change in state health policy, declaring that the state would suspend planning and implementation of the Affordable Care Act until after an expected U.S. Supreme Court decision next summer. This likely means Wisconsin will have to return a $38 million “early innovation” grant, and that the state will miss the deadline for enacting a plan to implement the Affordable Care Act, the national health care reform law, in Wisconsin.
This stunning shift in policy by Governor Walker makes it exceedingly unlikely that Wisconsin will be ready to implement vital reforms that if fully implemented will end discrimination against people with preexisting conditions and establish competitive health insurance marketplaces that can contain skyrocketing insurance costs. If the planning process is suspended until this summer, as Walker suggests, the State Legislature will be out of session and Wisconsin will be unable to meet the federal deadline or submitting its plans for full implementation of the Affordable Care Act. It is hard to see this new position as anything other than deliberate attempt to sabotage of health care reform.
Governor Walker’s dramatic change in position comes on the heals of Citizen Action of Wisconsin annual Wisconsin Health Insurance Cost Ranking report, which shows that Wisconsin health insurance hyperinflation has been almost 20% worse than the national average over the last decade, and that every metro area with the exception of Madison has had above average health insurance inflation. The report also found that Madison costs are 19-32% lower than the other major metro areas of Wisconsin because it has a more competitive health insurance market place. One of the key reforms Walker is now refusing to plan would create such marketplaces, known as health insurance exchanges, throughout Wisconsin.
In the absence of implementing the Affordable Care Act, Governor Walker has offered no alternative plans for reining in skyrocketing health insurance hyperinflation. His only major proposal for changing the health care system is forcing between 53,000 to 65,000 people off BadgerCare in the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
The Occupy Wall Street Movement is alive and thriving in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin neighborhood of Riverwest. This fall a committed group of Riverwest residents started an Occupy Riverwest group with a mission of raising the consciousness of their neighbors and surrounding communities to the message of the Occupy Wall Street Movement.
To further this message the group has carried out two "cash mobs" - Not a flash mob but a cash mob. A cash mob operates the same way as a flash mob with the big difference being why people appear. During a cash mob people appear to spend their hard earned money at a local business that will reinvest it in the surrounding community. Research shows that buying local reduces by half the amount of money that leaves the local economy.
The group held their first cash mob on December 3rd at a local Riverwest retail store, Fischberger’s Variety. (Watch TV story) The event packed the store all day and even days beyond. Cash Mob organizers handed participants tickets that stated why they were shopping at that particular store and the cashier recorded the amount spent by participants on the tickets and the totals were tallied at the event’s conclusion. The first Occupy Riverwest Cash Mob was from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm where participants spent a total of $1,909.72.
The event sent a positive message to the greater Milwaukee metropolitan area that collectively people can channel their money away from the 1% (big business) and to the 99% (small local businesses). The group held their second cash mob the following Saturday on December 10th at three Riverwest restaurants. The event was a huge success with all three locations seeing increased traffic and sales. The tickets used by participants for this event totaled $5,389.56. (Watch TV story)
The tactic is gaining attention nationally and spreading to other cities. Even former LA Governor Buddy Roemer re-tweeted support for the cash mobs. Occuppy Riverwest organizers are hopeful the cash mobs will appeal to a broader audience and challenge more people to see how they too are the 99%.
Tonight the group has their third cash mob entitled Cash Mob Thursday, at three new Riverwest locations from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The locations will be Truly Spoken Cycles (600 E. Center Street), KRS Hair, Skin & Nails (832 East Locust Street), Sunrise Foods (2879 N. Weil Street). Come out and demonstrate the collective power of purchasing local or try to plan a cash mob in your community.
