On the eve of Scott Walker’s talk to a group of corporate lobbyists in Springfield, a bi-state Citizen’s Truth Squad detailed how the controversial governor’s policies have hurt Wisconsin and would mean disaster for Illinois.
The panel of citizen experts on small business, health care, the environment and women’s rights took place today via tele-news conferenceto outline the hardships imposed north of the border by Walker’s policies over the last year.
“Wisconsin was once the proud birthplace of progressivism,” said William McNary, co-director of Citizen Action/Illinois that will co-host the news conference with its sister organization, Citizen Action of Wisconsin. “Under Governor Walker, progress has been rolled back on job creation, health care access, environmental protection, and women’s equality.”
Joining McNary was
ON JOB CREATION & THE ECONOMY:Jennifer Epps-Addison, Economic Justice Director, Citizen Action of Wisconsin and David Borris, Lake County, Illinois small business owner.
ON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION:Shalla Warner, Director of the Sierra Club/Wisconsin Chapter and Jack Darin, Director of the Sierra Club/Illinois Chapter.
ON HEALTH CARE:Kevin Kane, Health Care Organizer, Citizen Action of Wisconsin and John Peller, vice president of public policy of the AIDS Foundation in Illinois.
ON WOMEN’S RIGHTS:Dana Schultz, Director of 9 to 5 Wisconsin and Melissa Josephs, Advocacy Director of Women Employed.
“Economic growth is about one thing: job creation. During the first year of the Walker administration, Wisconsin lost some 11,500 jobs—the worst jobs record in the nation—even as Illinois’ sluggish economy added 36,500 new ones,” said David Borris, a Highland Park restaurant owner.
“What small businesses need to grow are customers—people with paychecks to spend. The worst thing for the Illinois economy would be to follow Walker’s plan for cutting jobs and public services to fund more corporate tax giveaways.”
Listen to "Post Election - What's wrong with Waukesha" Battleground Wisconsin Podcast We review the GOP Presidential Primary crazy train that swung through Wisconsin the past week, including Mitt Romney's gaffes, subs-for-votes, and Waukesha County's continued in-ability to count its votes in a timely manner. We welcome Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin's Nicole Safar to talk about the attack on their Appleton Clinic. We spotlight a teacher's union leader who stood up to right-wing bullying and defended the movement. We also review the week's recall news, redistricting, Obama's vehement critique of Paul Ryan's budget, and more!

Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal is yet another attack on working Americans, young children, students, older people, individuals with disabilities, the unemployed and people without access to health care. At the same time, Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, would give Americans who earn more than $1 million a $125,000 annual tax break by making the George W. Bush tax cuts permanent, and he would cut the effective tax rates for both rich people and corporations.
The U.S. House took up the Ryan Republican Budget yesterday. A vote is expected today.
Paul Ryan is living in another universe. It’s a universe run by millionaire 21st Century robber barons – greedy millionaires and their politicians in Congress who do their bidding. It’s certainly not a universe made up of people who believe that the strength of our economy and our country depends on the decisions and investments we decide to make together. That means investing in health care, education, and even in making sure that our families have enough to eat. Paul Ryan would sacrifice all of this so that a few people at the top of the economy enjoy even larger tax breaks at the expense of the rest of us.
Among the cuts the Ryan Republican Budget proposes: • Raising the age of Medicare eligibility, leaving millions without coverage, while simultaneously repealing the Affordable Care Act. • Converting Medicaid into a block grant program to states, resulting in more than $800 billion in cuts and taking away coverage from at least 14 million low-income Americans. • Cutting SNAP (food stamps) by $134 billion over the next ten years – at a time when hunger in America is increasing. • Devastating cuts to public education, and the elimination of access to Pell Grants for many college students. • Other sweeping cuts to safety-net programs like Head Start, child care, WIC, veterans’ assistance, Community Development Block Grants and jobs programs.
At the same time that the Ryan Republican Budget would cut the most basic necessities like health care and food assistance, it would drastically lower tax rates for the wealthiest Americans and corporations while making the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy permanent.
USAction is organizing the Fight for the 99% Campaign, an effort to create jobs and build an economy that works for all of us. In April, USAction affiliates will organize “tax day” events across the country to highlight economic injustice and the plight of our nation’s shattered middle class.
Citizen Action of Wisconsin is the state affiliate of USAction. USAction is a federation of 22 state affiliates that organize for a more just America. With our state partners, we build broad coalitions to win progressive campaigns that enrich people’s lives.
