Judge's Ruling on Anti-Rights Bill a Strike for Open Government

Posted by Brian Wooldridge in Untagged

Citizen Action of Wisconsin released the following statement on Judge Maryann Sumi’s decision today to place a temporary restraining order on enactment of Governor Walker’s abrogation of union rights for most public employees.

“Judge Sumi’s decision to enjoin the enactment of Governor Walker’s assault of the fundamental rights of workers is a vindication of Wisconsin’s proud tradition of open and transparent government,” said Robert Kraig, Executive Director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin.  “It is a travesty against Wisconsin traditions to enact such a radical change in violation of the state’s open meeting laws.  Our open meetings laws are not an inconvenience that can be disregarded by politically embattled politicians whenever it suits them.  Rather, they are basic standards and protections developed by generations of Wisconsin leaders to assure that all legislative decisions are made in the light of day and every citizen has the right to speak their mind on any proposal before it becomes law.  Unfortunately, Governor Walker and his legislative allies have shown as little regard for Wisconsin’s democratic traditions as they have for the fundamental rights of Wisconsin workers.”
